<\/iframe><\/p>\n\u201cEat local\u201d:<\/b> It\u2019s the mantra of righteous foodies everywhere. It connects hipsters, farmers, and soccer moms. It\u2019s the backbone of farmers markets and Whole Foods Markets alike. And it\u2019s what customers want. In fact, according to a 2014 National Grocers Association survey, 87.2 percent of consumers said local food options were \u201cvery or somewhat important\u201d in choosing a primary food store. Eating local is trendy. It\u2019s empowering. And it\u2019s more sustainable \u2014 right?<\/p>\nNot entirely, as John Hardy, a law student, discovered. While studying at Drake University in Des Moines, Hardy worked on an initiative for the city called, \u201cHealthy Helpings: Harnessing the Power of School Nutrition.\u201d His team presented to the <a href=\"http:\/\/dmampo.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesmetro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greater Des Moines Partnership<\/a> to persuade them to invest in local food and kids\u2019 health. The \u201cHealthy Helpings\u201d report offered to subsidize local farms by helping them partner with elementary school lunch programs. It was built on a simple notion: Local food is more sustainable.<\/p>\n\u201cWe started out thinking, ‘How do we get more local food on the lunch tray?’ [It was] based on the common assumption that the fewer miles the food travels, the less greenhouse gas emissions,\u201d Hardy says. But as the research rolled in, Hardy and his partner found glaring holes in an everyday belief. \u201cWe found that some of these basic assumptions are not always true,\u201d Hardy says, \u201cand local food is not always better or more sustainable.\u201d<\/p>\nAccording to a 2015 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service, sustainability comes down to efficiency. The report\u2019s conclusion? Local food actually produces a larger carbon footprint because transportation is often less efficient than foods marketed through commercial outlets.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"story-image-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/urban-plains.com\/2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Locally_Sourced_1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Locally_Sourced_1\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" \/><figcaption class=\"story-caption\">Local food can produce a larger carbon footprint because transportation is often less efficient than foods marketed through commercial outlets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nIt sounds contradictory, but it\u2019s true. Yes, that farmers market apple traveled fewer miles than the ones at your chain grocery store. But to measure the true environmental impact of each apple, you have to consider the complete life cycle of each piece of food \u2014 the production, the transportation, and the disposal.<\/p>\nIf a small-town Kansas farmer makes 100 trips transporting small batches of Honeycrisp apples to his local market, it seems eco-friendly \u2014 he\u2019s not traveling far. But a large California company with hefty equipment can transport more Honeycrisp apples to that Kansas town in one cross-country trip than that local farmer can haul in his 100. It can also handle orders more quickly, efficiently, and on better systems. At the end of the day, the big guy traveling across the country uses less energy to transport the same goods.<\/p>\n\u201cIf multiple small farms are all individually buying utilities, food, seed, and transportation, it\u2019s just not economically efficient,\u201d says Shellye Suttles, an agricultural economist with the USDA Economic Research Service. And lack of efficiency means it\u2019s not sustainable either.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2404\" src=\"http:\/\/urban-plains.com\/2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/locally-sourced_pullquotes-e1428007430989.png\" alt=\"locally-sourced_pullquotes\" width=\"1361\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\nFor consumers, these setbacks raise a moral dilemma and raises questions about well-intentioned grassroots efforts. If local food isn\u2019t more eco-friendly, is it still worth fighting for?<\/p>\nFor many, the answer is a resounding yes. When done right, localized food systems have countless advantages to society, environment, and health. Empirical research published in Local Food Systems<\/i> by Christopher L. Waltz found that localized food systems can boost employment and income in communities. And the local food movement raises a new consciousness about where food comes from and how it\u2019s made. Localized food has natural health benefits, too: it can forgo preservatives needed to survive long, time-consuming travel.<\/p>\nThe trend also fosters community. In many towns, farmers markets serve as a community gathering. They add vibrancy to city life. Many of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailymeal.com\/101-best-farmers-markets-in-america\" target=\"_blank\">biggest and best farmers markets<\/a> are in the Midwest. Take one stroll around the nationally recognized Midwest markets in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/food\/healthy-eating\/photos\/9-us-farmers-markets-every-food-lover-should-visit\/des-moines-farmers\" target=\"_blank\">Des Moines, <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/food\/healthy-eating\/photos\/9-us-farmers-markets-every-food-lover-should-visit\/minneapolis-farmers\" target=\"_blank\">Minneapolis<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/food\/healthy-eating\/photos\/9-us-farmers-markets-every-food-lover-should-visit\/des-moines-farmers\" target=\"_blank\">, and <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/food\/healthy-eating\/photos\/9-us-farmers-markets-every-food-lover-should-visit\/dane-county-farmers\" target=\"_blank\">Madison<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mnn.com\/food\/healthy-eating\/photos\/9-us-farmers-markets-every-food-lover-should-visit\/des-moines-farmers\" target=\"_blank\"> \u2014 you\u2019ll know immediately that they\u2019re about sharing much more than food.<\/a><\/p>\n<figure class=\"story-image-left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/urban-plains.com\/2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Locally_Sourced_2-1024x737.jpg\" alt=\"Locally_Sourced_2\" width=\"1024\" height=\"737\" \/><figcaption class=\"story-caption\">The local food trend can often foster community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe fix may lie in scaling up small farms. \u201cIf you could aggregate them [local farms] and take advantage of buying in bulk and creating regional hubs for local food, you could increase efficiency,\u201d Suttles says. But, she asks, can \u201cscaling up\u201d and \u201clocal\u201d work together? Aren\u2019t they contradictory?<\/p>\nWhile the solution is yet to be seen, for Hardy, it lies in a compromise of small and efficient.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-2405\" src=\"http:\/\/urban-plains.com\/2016\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/locally-sourced_pullquotes2-e1428007473785.png\" alt=\"locally-sourced_pullquotes2\" width=\"1295\" height=\"357\" \/><\/p>\n\u201cWhat we really want is some kind of middle ground where we\u2019re being sensible about things,\u201d Hardy says. \u201cHow can we help the local truck farmer expand from 5 acres to 50? And how can we work with the biggest industrial operations and somehow get them to incorporate some of the sustainable measures that the people over here are interested in?
