About

Urban Plains is a news and lifestyle magazine for young Midwesterners in search of journalism that reflects their lives unflinchingly. We tell stories that display flaws, triumphs and features of the heartland previously unseen. We bridge news with lifestyle through transparency, authenticity and accuracy.

AI Policy

Drake University’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication scales academic use of AI within the following levels.

  • Level 1 (AI-free): No AI at any stage. This is an academic integrity violation.
  • Level 2 (AI-assisted planning): AI for brainstorming, outlining, and research only. Your writing must be original.
  • Level 3 (AI-assisted editing): AI for planning, research, and feedback. Original work is still required.
  • Level 4 (AI-collaborative): AI as a working partner throughout. You’re responsible for accuracy and quality.
  • Level 5 (AI-full use): Unrestricted AI use. Focus is on directing and improving AI output.

Urban Plains does not permit the use of AI beyond Level 3.

Using AI to assist in information aggregation, workflow optimization, copywriting, copyediting or graphic design is contingent on approval by the Editor-in-Chief. Instances of AI assistance are thoroughly reviewed by human creators.

Urban Plains publishes only human-made, human-reported journalism.

This statement will be reviewed and updated each semester as technology and industry standards change. Exceptions or changes to these guidelines should be discussed with executive staff and Editor-in-Chief.
