Of the vast tallgrass prairie that used to cover 85% of Iowa, less than 1% percent remains, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge provides a timeout from the real world, a reminder of the neglected practice of letting yourself get lost in nature. It’s the first and largest reconstructed prairie in the state, and USA Today recently named it the best national wildlife refuge in the nation. But with the decline in federal funding for federal refuges, Neal Smith’s volunteers have become the soul of the prairie.
