Coaching Equality

Title IX was an Educational Amendment enacted in 1972. It fought gender discrimination by ensuring equal funding for all male and female activities that received federal aid. Title IX became important to women’s sports. Many female collegiate athletics programs owe their existence to the amendment.

But although Title IX guarantees funding, some argue that it doesn’t end discrimination. A recent firing of a female coach at the University of Iowa led to a Title IX complaint, as some female athletes claimed that her coaching techniques — deemed too “harsh” by the university — were OK for male colleagues to use. Listen below for our in-depth look at the issue.
