Back in March, Urban Plains reporters James Maertens and Tanner Jones cut through the countryside, taking a road trip from Des Moines, Iowa, to St. Louis, Missouri. Their trip included stops at the American Gothic House in Eldon, Iowa, the Mark Twain Cave in Hannibal, Missouri, and a night of food and drink in St. Louis. In all, the two-day excursion cost only $250 — and that’s including gas.
